Too often in conversation, when the other person is speaking, I’m thinking about how what they are saying relates to me and I begin a mental rough draft of what I will say next. I come to worship wondering what I will get out of it. And I sit in worship thinking about where I would rather be or making plans for how I will spend my afternoon. When I hear a compliment or good news, I take the credit. When I hear a critique or a problem, I conclude it’s about someone else because it’s not my fault. Does this sound familiar?

If you want to get serious about being in a relationship with God the first thing God does is throw you into a relationship with other people. It would probably be easier to worship God by yourself with a Starbucks coffee and the New York Times but that’s not how it works. Knowing and loving God happens in community. And the definition of “community” is a lot larger than we think.

This sermon is on the story of Jesus turning water into wine. All the gospels have a different first miracle, and in John's gospel this is the first miracle he describes. The story of Jesus changing water into wine is not about a God who stays aloof in the heavens. Nor is this a story about mere human achievement. John chooses this story to make a point.
