On New Year’s Eve day everybody is thinking about time. Billions of dollars are spent all over the world in the celebration of the passing of old time with the anticipation of new time. Time keeps our lives in order, but it also asks us questions. When is it time to help somebody and when is your help actually hurting them; giving them too much?  When is it time to confront somebody with the truth?  When is it time to let go of the past and give someone another chance? The wisdom is in knowing when it is time to do what. Life is full of these polarities; breaking down – building up; weeping – laughing; seeking – losing.  The question is when is it time to do what?

We cannot relate to Mary. She has a reserved seat in history that belongs only to her.  We can relate, in a small way, to God’s interruption in her life. When God takes on human flesh it’s not something that we plan.  God shows up in strange ways, in strange places, through strange people, at strange times. Mary didn’t know that God was going to use her.  She didn’t know what Jesus would actually do.  She didn’t know about the cross while she was sitting there next to the manger.  She didn’t know ahead of time about the resurrection or the ascension, or the Church.  Mary was like us in that she had to take it one day at a time.  God doesn’t give any of us a glimpse of the future.  She had to trust God.  We can all relate to that.

Songs of Advent: Song of Zechariah
Luke 1:67-79

C.S. Lewis says our lives have three parts to them; anticipating, living it and then remembering it.  The older I get the more valuable the remembering of it becomes. Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, had a rich memory. Half of his song is looking back at what God has done.  It’s in the remembering of the past that we are often given hope for the future.  When we remember how things have been we are encouraged as to how they may well be.

Songs of Advent: Song of David
Psalm 25:1-10

As this advent season begins we're reminded of the celebration of Jesus' birth and the redemption of man through his resurrection. You're bound to notice more people in the pews during the next few weeks. It's human nature. We're a fickle people. In our prosperity our love for God and neighbor often becomes superficial.  In times of trials and tribulations we quickly turn to God.  But in that sense, we are no different from Israel.  They too, were fickle.  In their prosperity they forgot the Lord their God.  In their times of trial they cried out to him.  But even so, this God for whom they waited delivered them, in spite of their sin.  Always, on every occasion this God for whom they waited eventually delivered them. On this first Sunday of Advent we too wait for God’s deliverance.
