Overview of types of classes offered
The curriculum of The Academy falls within the four pillars of Christian Education at Myers Park Presbyterian Church:
- Bible (B)
- Christian Living (CL)
- Reformed Theology and History (TH)
- Spiritual Growth (SG)
Each term The Academy will offer several courses within each discipline and the overall program of study is multi-level.
100-level courses are foundational to the Christian faith. They are designed for those participants with a basic understanding of the topic. 200- and 300- level courses are designed to be progressively more in-depth, providing a higher level of engagement, and building on the understanding and growth in discipleship gained within the 100-level courses.
Here is what you might find within each of the four disciplines of study:
B: The Bible:
These courses acquaint students with the content of the Old and New Testaments, provided an introduction to books of the Bible, and teach the basics of biblical interpretation. They may focus intensively on a particular book of the Bible, or delve into themes and issues in biblical studies.
CL: Christian Living:
These classes explore ethical and personal issues confronting us in our daily lives, and help develop attitudes and skills fostering Christian behavior, such as effective communication, listening, conflict management, parenting, and forgiveness. Some classes may deal with personal issues such as disappointment, doubt, depression, and dealing with death.
TH: Theology/History:
Course content includes basic doctrines of the Presbyterian tradition, how theology influences life concerns, and intellectual and critical issues in Christian thought. Classes may explore the lineage of the church from the apostles to the current century.
