Every Member Has a Ministry Introduction
Discussion with Steve Eason

I love a good story.  I’ve got a lot of stories to tell about ministry.  I once met a man who delivered groceries to the Wright Brothers!  His name was Captain Truxton Midgett.  In 1976 he was 93 years old.  Do the math.  He also watched on television as Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.  All in one lifetime.  His advice to me, “Things change.  And it’s not all bad!”

Members in Ministry

My experience tells me that where you really get turned on to Christianity is in the stories; where you really get a sense of who Jesus Christ is in the relationships.  That’s been true for me.  Many of you know that to be true as well.  Our effort to have every member identify their ministry is not an attempt to get people to volunteer more time to the church.  It’s an attempt to have our entire membership involved in a story.  It’s an attempt to build memories of how Jesus showed up somewhere unexpected and did something out of the ordinary that transformed your life.

On Easter Sunday we’re asking every member to bring a Commitment Card to the front and make a commitment to one area of ministry.  That ministry could be here at the church teaching third grade Sunday school, singing in the choir, working with the youth, being an elder or a deacon.  It could be somewhere else.  If you’re already doing something all you have to do is put in on the card and let us know.  Tell us your story.  If you want to make a commitment in a new area there are plenty of opportunities.  If you don’t know what to do just put down, “I don’t know, give me a call.”  And we will do just that.

This is something we plan on doing every Lent and Easter from here out.  In light of the resurrection of Jesus Christ we are making a response to his grace by making a commitment to one area of ministry.  Every member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church has a ministry.  We just need you to name what that is so we can celebrate the story with you.
